Kieran was here for a very specific reason: he wanted to find a Cubone. Recent Nightshade research focused on the interesting alternations between regular types and wildly different regional variants, and it seemed like none of Kieran's grunts were capable of acquiring a Cubone specimen for themselves. Was it true that some genetic coaxing could elicit these variations out of non-Alolan specimens? That was something the Nightshade scientists would find out soon enough.

Something stirred in the grass. Kieran's fingers ran over his embossed Luxury Balls. He braced himself for impact.

Where the hell did it go?? she thought, frustrated beyond belief now. She swore the little Cubone she had been hunting was right here. It was a tiny Cubone but a meal nonetheless, and her pack was waiting for her to return with it. The dry, cracking dirt underneath the tall meadow grass was very hard, but tons of pokémon in this area could burrow underneath it. With her sharp claws, she swung at the grass frantically trying to clear her view of the ground. There had to be a hole somewhere, it couldn't have just crawled away. She would have heard the grass rustling with her sharp hearing if it had.

She was so focused on her prey though, that her "sharp hearing" hadn't picked up on the sound of footsteps of an approaching trainer. Her stomach sank and she spun around quickly, claws up and on high alert. A tall, dark figure stood in front of her about twenty feet away, and it was already in a defensive stance. Weavile cursed under her breath.

The last thing she wanted right now was a trainer to deal with. She had a pack to get back to, a pack that she had promised dinner to. For a second she considered trying to escape, she could dive under the tall grass and try to lose the trainer with her speed. However, her pack wasn't far, and she risked exposing them if the trainer decided to search for her. Nope, she was stuck.

She chose an aggressive front, and swiped her claws in the air angrily. She let out the scariest roar she could manage, in an attempt to show the trainer she was strong and she knew it. Her heart raced, and adrenaline was pumping full speed through her body now. Back off mister, this is not a good time to pick a fight with me, she begged. If she got very very lucky, he'd move on and leave her be. If he chose to fight her, well... with her pack's lives at stake, she'd give it her all.

Kieran swore he saw a little skull helmet dart off into the distant grass, but another Pokemon replaced that rare sight immediately. This one wore a bloody red crown and flashed its claws of icy white in a display of hunterly prowess. The prospect of a good catch melted Kieran's disappointment away, pulling his face into a sharp grin. Damn the Cubone, he'd always wanted a Weavile! Roused to fighting pitch by its strong roar, Kieran threw out a Luxury Ball with an eager snarl, releasing Jonah the Nype Null (Silver). While the Weavile was a Pokemon of nature as almost Pokemon were, Jonah was a chimeric abomination that took good things from the earth and spun them into a corrupted image of gross, cruel power. Its moist fins stirred with unholy life. The grass turned away from its reptilian claws. Something breathed deeply from behind the iron mask.

"I want to catch it, Jonah, so go slow." While Kieran's imperial voice rang softly, Jonah roared like the worst of beasts. Three beams, one each of fire, ice and lightning, spun around his axe-like horn at dizzying speeds before soaring forth and exploding wildly. Jonah used Tri Attack!

Unfortunately, it was not her lucky day after all. Not only had she lost the Cubone that would have been dinner for her entire pack, she had let her guard down in the process and fell prey to an even bigger predator. She had been praying it would just keep moving, but it did not. Instead, it summoned a pokémon to its side and ordered an aggressive attack. Weavile grit her teeth as the sudden realization of exactly how much danger she was in hit her hard.

The newest arrival to this party was massive, standing just over 6 feet tall. It looked like some sort of monster, with black eyes and metal... or brick... she actually wasn't sure what he was made of. He seemed to have claws but he also had an aquatic-looking tail. Whatever he was didn't matter. What mattered now was getting out of this mess alive.

She had very little time to figure it out, as the defending pokémon acted immediately and fired off its first attack. In seconds, a burst of red, yellow, and blue energy was headed her way and fast. Fortunately, she had been ready. She dug her claws into the ground and dove forward, just barely feeling the heat of the fire across her back as she hit the ground. You've got this, she encouraged herself. Her long claws gave her the best traction, allowing her to swiftly dart forward through the grass towards the enemy. With another roar, she leaped into the air coming down hard with her claws in an attempted Night Slash.

While the Weavile outran Jonah's attack, Jonah himself wasn't as fortunate. Blessed with formidable bulk and muscle, the synthetic monster was hard to miss, and little hidey-holes amidst the grass didn't open for him like they did for the wild one. To make matters worse, that Weavile was one swift attacker. Her claws dug deep into Jonah's scales and injected throbbing dark energy into his flesh. That Night Slash hurt much more than one would expect, and Jonah staggered backwards, roaring so loudly that the woods shrank away from him in fright. Kieran almost felt the attack piece his own side, and he knew he had to begin hitting heavily against that devil.

"Use Iron Head!" Moving away from their previous tactic of using light and constant blows, Kieran's team was now going fully offensive. Jonah's helmet vibrated with danger as the forces behind it burst against its shackles, and the chimera's howls shook the ground as he charged towards his opponent.

Hah! she celebrated, not only executing a successful attack but a critical one at that. She had come down full force with her claws and from the sound of it, caused the opponent some serious pain. She landed to the right of him with a thud, thankful for the thick meadow grass underneath them that cushioned her landing. The opponent had staggered back a few steps, creating a few feet of space between them.

As she landed, she heard the trainer shout out another order. She had just barely enough time to stand up straight before the enemy charged her full force. Sure, she was agile and fast, but it helped to be solid on her feet where her claws could dig into the ground. His attack came just a little too soon for her to steady herself, and the thick, cold metal of his head slammed into her like a freight train.

The force threw her into the air and backwards, and she landed on the dry dirt several feet away, tumbling another few feet before rolling to a stop. Her entire body stung with an aching pain, the kind of pain when you stub a toe but over your entire body. Her head began to throb worse than any migraine you could ever have. She couldn't see and she definitely couldn't move. She took in deep breaths, praying to Arceus the attacker didn't come after her right now. Thankfully, after a good few deep breaths her vision began to return and she could feel her body again.

She struggled to her feet and turned to keep an eye on her attacker. She'd have to seriously watch for that attack if he uses it again, she might not make it through next time. After a few more deep breaths, the pain had lessened but her muscles still felt like melted butter. At least she could move though, so she readied herself and planned her next attack. This pokémon was clearly made of steel or some sort of metal, so perhaps she'd give her Metal Claw a try and see if that does any better.

Although her body ached and she knew she had slowed down drastically, she still darted forward and ran towards her opponent. With her claws extended, she lunged forward and took a few swipes, really hoping she wasn't really as weak as she felt at the moment.

How did this imp move so quickly? Jonah didn’t stand a chance at evading this thing! Even with a massive dent in its side, the Weavile zipped out of sight and reappeared in a swirling fury of dancing metal, raking its claws across the monster's sides. Jonah staggered backwards and roared like the grinding gears of an infernal engine. His tiny foe definitely didn’t have the strength to force him backwards manually, but her vicious claws stung like laser beams in a dark room and forced him to recoil from their sharpness. Pain sounded from the face behind the mask, swearing vengeance on the wild one and provoking his trainer's drive to fight. That sound bore straight into his trainer’s core as well. Kieran’s mouth struck a dangerous snarl, and his dirty survival switches clicked to life. He was going to show this Weavile that he was the one to be feared.

Kieran’s expression twisted dangerously under the heat of the battle. The creature was a speedy thing, but they could do even better. ”Use Aerial Ace!” Kieran’s masked devil swerved out of sight and the air shrieked in revulsion at its unnatural speed. Where had the genetically engineered killing machine gone? Even Kieran didn’t know the answer, but be it the woods behind or the tall grass around them, Kieran’s snarl deepened in anticipation of his future triumph. There was no escape for his quarry now. He looked forward to watching the Weavile fall and acknowledge that he was the real king of the field. A dangerous buzzing sound rushed through the wind as Jonah closed in on its target, and he could hear the sound of slashing claws close by.

The cold steel of his body scraped across her skin as her claws dug in. The sound of metal scraping against metal was quite unnerving, producing a very high pitched screech. Her opponent let out a roar of pain. She came to a stop and bounced backwards, leaving another good amount of space between the two of them. She was panting, trying to catch her breath, her body still buzzing from the previous attack.

Now she had done it. Both the pokémon and his trainer were clearly angry and frustrated. This made her smirk just a little, realizing she had at least given them a challenge. Her smile was quickly interrupted when the trainer gave his next order. Aerial Ace?? Wasn't that... this pokémon doesn't have wings! She only had a few seconds for those thoughts to even form before the attack was upon her. The beast in front of her did fly through the air towards her, piercing through the wind and hitting her head on... again.

Although this particular attack didn't hit nearly as heavily as that Iron Head he used, her body hadn't quite fully recovered from that one yet, her body was still sore. The force kicked her backwards again, causing her to hit the ground and roll in the dirt and grass once more. Ugggggghhhhhhhhhh, she groaned loudly. She lay still, taking in deep breaths and gritting her teeth, feeling the pain course over her muscles again. She wanted to give up. Could she just lay here forever? Or at least until her body didn't hurt anymore?

She struggled. She mustered up all the strength she could, and was able to make it to her knees. Her muscles shook uncontrollably, and she began to worry she didn't have the strength to keep fighting. She turned to look at the trainer and his partner, also worried he might try to capture her in her weakened state. She began to think of her pack, how she might not see them again and how she had left them hungry. Her heart hurt, but she had to stay strong. She crawled forward, attempted to get to her feet but collapsed in the dirt.

Her brain buzzed, she had to think of something, ANYTHING, she could do to get out of this mess. She barely had enough strength to stand, her body had almost literally been hit by a train, TWICE. She sat facing her opponents and attempted one last attack. The only other attack she knew that didn't involve moving was Icy Wind. If the trainer didn't attempt to catch her in her vulnerable state, she might be able to work up the energy. She closed her eyes and focused, putting all of her remaining energy into it, and bellowed forth a gust of freezing cold wind. It should still do a little bit of damage, and at least slow down this monster and give her some time to recuperate and think.

One would never really know how a creature as big and stout as Jonah could take into the air, but he did it anyway, and with such speed that all he left behind in the visual field was a rapidly dissolving blur. Amidst the rush of the battle, Jonah's disappearance opened up a sudden space of silence, and Kieran found himself suspended in a sense of admiration at how scientists managed to produce a creature that made a fool of nature. Soon, a crashing blow snapped Kieran back to reality. As expected, Jonah's attack nailed its target, but the Weavile somehow survived being smashed downwards by Jonah's immense weight. Kieran's brow darkened. Was Jonah still too weak to win, or did nature find a way to triumph?

Even though he was engineered for killer success, Jonah was still a Pokemon, and Kieran's trainerly discernment told him that the Type Null's time was drawing to an end. He was becoming slower, a sign that he was succumbing to his injuries. The Weavile's attacks were precise and sharp, each blow designed to cut deep with maximum efficiency for pain. Perhaps nature always found an upper hand, and maybe man could never play God as well as Arceus himself. When the Icy Wind hit Jonah straight in the face, Kieran expected the frosty blast to knock him out for good. Yet, there he stood, his feet still planted in the ground even though his sides trembled softly. Streaks of snow smeared themselves across his mask, but his resolve glowed through with a vital force that science could not synthesise.

If Jonah was going to push through, then Kieran would as well. "Use Dragon Claw!" Kieran was proud of his new partner, and his pride burned throughout his voice. Giving up was in neither of their natures, which might be why both Kieran and Jonah merged into each other so well. Whether by circumstance or by science, both of them were optimised for incisive action, and neither of them gave any less than their best. Even though the Icy Wind reduced his speed, Jonah galloped forward as crackling energy shaped itself into a draconic aura around him. With a roar like thunder, he swung his scaled claws forward.

Aria Wolfe: minor detail, but I just realised that Type Null has Battle Armour, which means Jonah couldn't have been affected by by a critical hit. Apologies! I have retconned my post.

This was it. She never thought she'd spend her last moments fighting for her life in a meadow after just trying to find some dinner. Funny how life could change direction on you in an instant. She cursed herself for being so stubborn. She just had to chase after that Cubone didn't she? She couldn't just let it go and move on. She tended to fixate on one thing and now it had finally bit her in the tail.

She was exhausted. Her entire body ached something fierce and she could barely stand. Her icy wind attack was the last she could muster, and even though it had hit, the monstrous metal beast stood strong. She groaned, not just from the pain but from frustration. She wasn't going to win this, it was obvious now. And she definitely didn't have the strength to run. Nope, she was done for.

C'mon, seriously? Another attack?? she exasperated, just wanting this to be over now. She watched with squinting eyes as the beast powered forward. Closing her eyes tightly, she braced herself for impact and tried to think about her friends and family back in her pack. At least they would be safe. Whether this trainer defeats her or catches her, at least he was focused on her and doesn't know anything about where his pack is. They might miss her or wonder what happened to her, but they'd be safe.

It wasn't a hit head on like it was before, but rather a swipe of the claws. Her eyes had been closed, but thick nails came down hard on her head, slashing at her face and forcing her down to the ground. To her surprise, her body was already so numb she barely felt it. All she could feel was the stinging of fresh wounds across her face, but her body had already taken so much. She lay face down in the grass, and for a few moments the world around her was silent.

There was suddenly no Cubone, no trainer, and no defending pokémon. There was no noise, aside from the breeze whirling through the grass and the chirping of Kricketot in the distance. It was just her and nature, and it felt so good to rest. She took in the deepest breath of air her lungs could manage, and let out a long, slow sigh. She wasn't alone, and she knew that. She had to move.

With the last bit of remaining energy she had, she lifted her head and opened her eyes. The trainer and his pokémon were a blur. She let out a pathetic "weav..." and wondered if maybe, just maybe, this trainer would have mercy on her. She was dizzy, and couldn't really focus on where the trainer was exactly, but hopefully he could hear her plea. What choice did she have at this point? She was done for, she couldn't take another hit. She had to hope, to pray... that Arceus was looking down on her this evening and spare her.

Kieran Reed Haha no worries! I wouldn't have caught that anyway! O.o

The flames from Jonah's Tri Attack faded out as they mingled into the ice and dust, and the meadow returned to a hollow silence like the inside of a dry skull. In other words, life went back to normal, with Kieran back on top of the world. Somehow, Jonas emerged victorious and smashed the Weavile into the ground, asserting his dominance over a powerful enemy. Kieran rediscovered his breath, and his lungs expanded deeply for the first time in a tense while. The Weavile gave him a good time, just as it promised from the beginning.

As Kieran took a step in with a Luxury Ball ready for capture, his eyes caught a glimpse of an emotion he knew only too well. That Weavile's eyes reflected light like faint shattered mirrors, and her back curled over in shame. She was looking for mercy in a world that had none. Without money, strength, thirst, where could one go?

Kieran tossed the Luxury Ball in her direction. He'd learnt that life was about fighting his way to the top, and he also knew that people without any other option had to lean on the kindness of strangers. Maybe the Weavile would learn to trust him, and they could hold onto each other in the middle of a meadow that didn't care. She would have a good life with him.

Her eyes caught the glimpse of something shiny in the trainers hand, but before she could figure out what it was, she dropped her head. Her energy was almost completely gone, she couldn't even hold her head up anymore. Whatever object it was, she didn't care. She just wanted to be left alone. Then, he tossed it at her. How rude! As if she wasn't already down for the count, now he's throwing items at her?

There was a blinding flash, and then her world turned to darkness. She couldn't see anything at all, but she could feel something strange and unusual. She could feel the pain leaving her body, the soreness leaving her muscles, and the stinging leaving her wounds. The darkness felt relaxing, almost therapeutic, and she felt like all of her worries were slipping away. It was warm, cozy, and inviting her to stay.

She didn't fight it. She didn't want to! She could finally rest and be free of this battle, this conflict, and this pain. Now she felt safe, and maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all. She remembered the trainer, and his super strong pokémon. If that pokémon was so strong and so trained in battle, maybe she could be too. Maybe he'd take care of her just as well as his other pokémon. That was a worry for another day, though. Right now, she took a deep breath and closed her eyes, letting the serenity rush over her as she drifted off to sleep.

Congratulations! The Weavile was captured!
