The battle was growing more and more fierce as it went forward. Each time, Sophie moved into the lead, Jae would always find a way to pull back. Is this the nature of a Pokémon battle, Sophie thought to herself, quizzically. The little Togedemaru took the Fire Spin, even as the flames licked the metallic shell of the hedgehog, it still fought on.

Quite suddenly, Togedemaru rolled itself up into a ball and shot across the battlefield, almost like a little steel cannonball. Even with the flames still wrapped around it, it still charged for Charlie. Were the flames enhancing the power of his attack? That was extraordinarily impressive, if true.

“Charlie, watch out!” Sophie called but it was too late. The cannonball-like Pokémon shot into Charlie and flung him backward. In seconds, he had crumpled on the floor like nothing more than a rag doll. “Ch-Char…” it said, softly.

“Charlie? You okay, can you keep battling?” Sophie called softly to her partner. Charlie nodded and held its head up from the dirt. Just in time to see a white light shimmer over the Togedemaru, restoring its health back. The result of the Wish?

“Charr...” Charlie snarled, as it stood. It looked to Sophie for an order and she nodded back. It was clear that Charlie didn’t want to slow or stop. “Charlie, let’s put some distance between us and the Togedemaru. Smokescreen!”

Charlie nodded and opened his mouth. However, this time, instead of a stream of fire, Charlie instead spat out a thick cloud of black smoke. The thick and acrid smoke clouded the battlefield hiding both Pokémon from one another.

Charlie used Smokescreen
Fiestar's accuracy fell.

A smile hovered over Jae's lips as he watched Charlie cloaking himself in thick black smoke. Despite the initial blunder, this girl seemed to have a knack for Pokémon battling. "Smokescreen is an extremely versatile move," he noted. This was a tactically sound choice from Sophie, and Jae wondered for a moment if she truly appreciated the full effects of her choices thus far. "It's a defensive move that makes it harder for your opponent to detect and accurately hit your Pokémon. Combined with a move like Fire Spin, it has the added benefit of helping you stall for time while you whittle down your opponent bit by bit."

That was exactly what Fiestar had feared. Surrounded by flames, she had limited time before her stamina was fully sapped, but now that she was also besieged by smoke she wasn't confident of defeating the Charmander before she succumbed to the flames. Dark shapes and shadows in the smoke startled her and made her jump, and even worse, she couldn't tell which was her opponent and which were merely smoke and shadows.

A melee attack would be unwise, lest Fiestar chose the wrong target. Such a pity though; Fiestar had accumulated quite a bit of momentum with her previous Rollout attack, which would have empowered her next attempt at it. "You're not secretly an experienced battler, are you?" Jae asked with a laugh. "Because you're doing very well for a first-time battler."

Rather than play a guessing game, Jae reasoned that it would be better to draw the Charmander out. "Stay calm, Fiestar. Use Charge!" Understanding her trainer's intentions, Fiestar raised the needle behind her head like a lightning rod. The yellow tip glowed as sparks gathered around it, and she charged herself up like a capacitor. The electric field wrapped around her protectively, but at the same time it was crackling ominously, hinting of the potential damage Fiestar could cause should she unleash an electrical discharge. The flames continued to lick at her armour, and smoke swirled around her. But in the middle of the darkness, Fiestar was glowing like a beacon, as though daring her opponent to attack her now.

Fiestar began charging power!
Fiestar's Sp.Def rose!

Fiestar was hurt by Fire Spin! [Turn 2]

Fiestar's stat changes: +1 Def, +1 Sp.Def, -1 Acc

That was quite a compliment from what Sophie assumed, an experienced trainer. Her cheeks flushed and her lips curled into a bright smile. Whilst in retrospect, the only battles she had ever witnessed had been between her own brother, during his training sessions. “Well, not really. I just saw my brother trainer sometimes. I used to watch,” she added feebly. “He’s a really good trainer but he’s away at some far away region.” She could clearly remember his battles and some of the strategies he had used once upon a time. One certain memory flooded back into her mind, the harder, Sophie thought about it. Maybe, she would give that a try…

The thick smoke cloud flooded the entire battlefield with a black vapor hiding Charlie from the little Togedemaru, Fiestar. Charlie stood in the center of the arena, just waiting. Meanwhile, the Togedemaru had made its next move. Its tail glowed with a shimmering yellow light. Even though the thick smoke, visible and vulnerable. “Alright, Charlie. How about this. Use Ember but spin around as you do it, okay?”

Charlie looked at Sophie a little confused but then nodded, obediently. From his central position on the battlefield, he began to spin on the spot. Simultaneously, a burst of bright red sparks shot from the tail flame and spread themselves across the battlefield. The effect of spinning seemed to spread the fire much more effectively than drawing in closer.

Charlie used Ember, with an added spinning motion.

"Stay alert, Fiestar," Jae said, guiding his Togedemaru through this stage of the battle. Raising her guard, Fiestar glanced around her, trying to see where her opponent was.

There! As Sophie gave her command, a brilliant spiralling jet of flame lit up the cloud of black smoke from within. "Aim for the centre, now!" Following her trainer's advice, she pointed her needle at where she thought Charlie was and unleashed the energy she had stored. A bolt of electricity pierced through the smoke, but whether or not she hit her mark remained to be seen.

Conversely, Sophie's (literal) new spin on the basic fire-based attack was working as she had intended. The scorching wall of flames that surged towards the Togedemaru was impossible to avoid, and Fiestar hurriedly curled up into a ball again, hoping that the residual energy she still had left after charging up would help take some heat off her. It did, but nonetheless the fiery assault still hurt a lot. Compounding her problems were the flames that still surrounded her and gave her no respite. Somehow or another, she managed to endure the punishment, though she was dangerously close to reaching her limit.

Fiestar used THUNDER SHOCK!

Fiestar was hurt by Fire Spin! [Turn 3]
