Dakota didn't mind big cities one bit. Being alone in the city is drastically different from being alone in the country. How so? Let's say you live on a farm. The nearest store or other residence is miles away, you have to drive to get anywhere. You're free to do whatever you want on your property. However, in a big city, you are not. You're surrounded by people. You walk everywhere. It's the only place you can be alone without actually being alone. Dakota prefers this type of loneliness. Surrounded by strangers that know nothing about you but are within reach if you ever chose to reach out to them.

Tonight, she was on a mission. Her recent battle with the hot guy from the bar had sparked a desire in her. No, not for hot guys at the bar. For battles. Back at home her battles were petty, little squabbles that were only to make a point or settle an argument. Her first battle in Eden was spectacular. Their pokémon fought hard. It wasn't entirely one-sided, she held her own. She was rather proud of her pokémon team, and was now motivated to train harder. She wanted them to grow, not just in strength but in courage and wisdom. So, here she was. Out on the town.

Pokémon rarely wandered out into the streets, she was pretty sure. They probably hid in back alleys, dumpsters, etc. There was the occasional park square too, typically small clearings of grass and trees and benches. She walked with her hands in her hoodie pocket and hood over her head. Her eyes darted back and forth though her head never moved. She kept an eye out for anything unusual, a shadow here or a sound there. It was hard to hear anything over the buzz of traffic and trains, but she still tried. Surely she'd come across something.

Must find tasty sludge...

That one thought dominated the Grimer's mind as he flowed through the complicated network of sewage pipes beneath the city, seeking out the source of the fragrance that hung in the air. Oozing out of a narrow pipe, he entered a major artery in the system and continued tracking the elusive scent. His gut instincts told him that it came from the surface, and so he squeezed through a commonly used crack in the pipe and forced his slimy bulk through the dirt and earth, finally emerging onto the street level.

Glancing around him, he found himself inside a nodescript dank back alley. Faded graffiti art punctuated the grimy brick walls, and overflowing dumpsters silently awaited their long overdue turn to be attended to.

He sniffed the air again. Nope, his prize was not here, but it was near.

Keeping to the shadows, the Grimer waddled down the alley and crossed a street to yet another alley on the opposite side. The fragrance grew stronger and stronger until he finally arrived at a lone dumpster belonging to a greasy spoon.

Overwhelmed by hunger, the Grimer cast all caution to the wind and pulled himself into the dumpster, landing upon large transluscent bags full of dark golden liquids – waste cooking oil and grease. Without hesitation he tore apart one of the bags and drank deeply, feasting on the waste oil within. But just as he was about to start on the second bag, he heard a commotion outside. Was it the waste collector? Had he come to snatch these bags full of tantalising oil from him? Cautiously he seeped out of the dumpster, waiting in ambush for the mysterious person to appear.

As she passed by one of the many dark alleys in this city, a rustling sound caught her attention. She halted, squinting her eyes in a pointless attempt to see in the dark better. The noise faded, and she was just about to take another step when she heard it again. Curious, and sticking to her plan to get in some battles tonight, she turned towards the sound and stepped into the dark alley. Faded graffiti decorated the walls, with random crates and metal containers lining them. A large dumpster sat at an angle against the wall.

The sound of a bag ripping echoed from inside the dumpster. It was most likely a pokémon scrounging for food, which made her want to investigate even further. On the off chance that some dirty homeless person was in there, she'd turn and take off back towards the street. She approached quietly, just in case. Gently, she placed her fingertips on the edge of the dumpster and stood up on her toes to peek inside. The foul smell of spoiled food and cooking grease filled her nostrils, but she didn't see anything aside from ripped open bags of garbage. "Huh." she let out, disappointed. She stepped away from the dumpster and took a look around, placing a hand on her belt where her pokéballs were just in case.

(I wasn't sure if you wanted him to ambush her or not so I left it here. Feel free to have him jump out at her, er- slither? Seep? Whatever he does. ^.^ Or I can make changes if you want me to. Thanks for picking this up!)

((OOC: Based on Dakota's app, may I presume that she's wearing boots now?))

The approaching footsteps became louder and louder, like the rapid heartbeat of a flustered creature. Not that the Grimer possessed a heart, but the feeling was the same. Slinking away just in time, his slimy body reformed as a puddle under the dumpster as the mysterious human approached. For a few agonising moments, he remained completely still and silent.

From his hiding spot, he could only see the human's feet, or rather, boots. Waste collectors wore boots, that he remembered from his previous encounters with them. So this must be a waste collector, right? Slowly his flattened form flowed closer and closer towards the boots as he moved into position for his ambush, waiting for the human to start emptying the dumpster. That's right! That would be when they were distracted and easy to frighten.

But instead of taking out the trash, the person tip-toed before letting out a disappointed "huh", as though they were looking for something but didn't find it. The unexpected turn of events perplexed the Grimer. Weren't they supposed to start taking out the trash? No matter… if the perfect moment wasn't going to happen anytime soon, he would have to improvise.

As quickly as a puddle of sludge could move, the Grimer poured forth from beneath the dumpster, flowing between the two boots and pooling behind the human. Like some kind of vile creature in a horror movie, he reared up to his full height (of just under 3 foot, dismayingly) and bellowed as loudly as he could, doing his best to make up for his lack of size with the sheer volume of his voice.

(OOC: Yep! Absolutely! She doesn't wear anything unless it looks good with her black combat boots ^.^)

As she took a look around, some motion by her feet and the bottom of the dumpster caught her attention. Her eyes darted down to her boots, catching a glimpse of some sort of purple sludge-like liquid before it took form and let out a loud roar that echoed in the alley. The burst of sound practically pushed her backwards it was so loud, and she stumbled back a few steps. Whatever it was had left slime around the edges of her boots, making them slick and unstable. Her attempt to back up resulted in her slipping on the concrete and landing with a thud on her rear end.

"Ughhhh..." she let out, more of a grunt rather than a scream. Her tailbone stung with pain, along with the palms of her hands that she attempted to catch herself with. It was rather dark in the alley still, but she could just barely make out a large blob of purple with eyes and a mouth. It had to be the strangest, and grossest, pokémon she had ever seen. Remembering that it was a wild pokémon and she might actually be in some sort of danger, she reached for her belt before even attempting to get back to her feet.

Her fingers felt for any pokéball, she didn't care which one, and plucked it off her belt. The pokémon she kept on her whenever she traveled late at night were always her best. As soon as one was in her hand, her fingers found the button and she pressed it. A bright flash lit up the alley and she got a good glimpse of the wild pokémon. It was exactly what she thought she had seen, a large blob of purple goo. Great.

Nabooru, her Fletchinder, burst from the pokéball and took to the sky. She spun around corkscrew-style and backflipped before diving back down towards her trainer. Seeing her trainer on the ground, looking volnerable, sparked a worry inside her. Her eyes scanned the area and located the threat right in front of her. She spread her wings to stop middair between her trainer and the wild pokémon. "Eeeeeeerrrrrrr!" she squawked defensively. Confident that she'd be safe now, Dakota stood to her feet. She studied the wild pokémon for a second before planning out her attack. Being a blob of sludge, it was probably best if Boo stayed clear and used ranged attacks only.

"Flamethrower." Dakota practically blurted out. Time was of the essence, this pokémon was going to attack at any second. The first attack that came to her mind when she thought of ranged attacks was her flamethrower. It was the best fire attack she had, and Dakota wondered what kind of effect fire would even have on this pokémon. She didn't have much time to ponder it though, as Nabooru had already built up the energy and released it. A large burst of flames erupted from her beak, stretching out across the alley and lighting it up. Dakota had to shield her eyes, and she could feel the heat on her skin as if she were on a beach under a hot summer sun.

Dakota sent out Nabooru!
Nabooru used Flamethrower!

((OOC: What's with the RNG Gods today?))

The Grimer's roar elicited a rather dramatic response from the human, sending her stumbling backwards and falling on the ground with a grunt. Did he really seem that frightening to her? Underneath that mean scowl on his face, he was actually extremely pleased with himself. His plan to scare away this strange waste collector seemed to be going swimmingly well –

– until a brilliant flash of light blinded him momentarily. What was that? Alarmed, the Grimer growled in anger and fear. And suddenly, from seemingly out of nowhere, a bird Pokémon swooped in and positioned herself between him and the human and screeched. He hadn't seen a bird like this one before, but how dangerous could it be anyway?

Dismissing the bird as nothing more than a pest, the Grimer advanced, intent on chasing away both the human and the bird. But that plan fell apart immediately when the bird opened her beak and spewed fire right at him. Searing pain overwhelmed him immediately. Unfortunately for him, the intense heat ignited the waste oil that he had just ingested, and he burst into flames from within.

He howled in agony and surprise, a terrible sound that reverberated throughout the alleyway. Driven crazy by the pain and blinded by the light and smoke from the flames, the Grimer opened his maw and belched a noxious cloud of toxic fumes before shambling forth towards the source of his suffering.

Grimer was burned!

Grimer used POISON GAS!

Grimer was hurt by his burn!

To her immediate relief, Boo's flames hit the wild pokémon head on and it screamed in pain. The sound echoed through the entire alley, surely making anyone within hearing distance feel uneasy. Dakota however, did not. She felt better, she felt safer, and more confident. "Yes! Great job, Boo!" she said, gripping her fists, excited. Her eyes followed Nabooru as she flew up and down, flapping her wings happily.

Neither of them saw it coming. It was a mistake to take her eyes off her opponent, and Dakota knew better. In anger, the wild pokémon had bellowed out a large cloud of smoke. At first, it just looked menacing but harmless. It was not. It stung Dakota's nostrils and felt as if she were inhaling flames. Her throat began to burn and her eyes began to water. She pulled her hoodie up to cover her mouth and nose, but not before erupting into a coughing fit. Nabooru did the same, flapping her wings unsteadily as she coughed.

Nabooru hit the ground, just barely landing on her feet. She shuddered as she coughed, and Dakota's confidence went out the window. Was she okay? Was this smoke toxic or what? Dakota had to think fast. Which moves did Nabooru knew that involved creating some sort of breeze or wind? Anything that could help clear out this alley of the smoke. Through her tears and coughs, she managed to spit out the words, "Tailwind!" And then there was silence. Could she hear her? Maybe she couldn't hear her...

A breeze kicked up behind her, and within a few seconds, the smoke began to dissipate. Nabooru had managed to whip up somewhat of a breeze with her tail feathers, the speed increasing slowly at first but gradually picking up speed. Breathing became easier and Dakota's eyes began to water less. She cleared her throat and waited, finally able to see her surroundings again. Her eyes searched frantically for their opponent. Who knew what the wild pokémon had been up to while they were temporarily blinded.

Nabooru used Tailwind!

"Grimer!!!" The sludge Pokémon roared triumphantly as he enveloped his adversaries with noxious fumes. Under the cover of the impromptu smokescreen, the Grimer ambled forth towards the dumpster as quickly as his bulk would allow. That would give him something to hide behind should the bird Pokémon attempt to roast him once again. The flames that still clung on to him continued to scorch him, a painful reminder that he was up against a powerful opponent tonight.

Successfully slipping past the human, he turned around just as a sudden gust of wind whipped up and shredded the black cloud of smoke to bits. There were but scant moments before she realised where he had vanished to. Not that he still had the element of surprise; with a loud, disgusting retching sound that immediately betrayed his location, he regurgigated the foul contents of his stomach-equivalent and vomited forth globs of sludge at the bird Pokémon. He knoew it wouldn't be enough to dispatch of the bird just yet, but if he kept at it, he might have a shot at defeating his opponent and chasing away this strange waste collector.

Grimer used SLUDGE BOMB!

With the smoke cleared now, the two could see. The sludge pokémon had attempted to seek shelter behind the dumpster, but turned to let out another attack. Following a gut-wrenching sound, the pokémon spit up several times, spewing forth the contents of its stomach at Nabooru. "Watch out, Boo!" Dakota cried out, hoping to get her pokémon's attention in time. Nabooru was already on it.

Already flapping her wings, suspended in the air, it wasn't difficult for the bird to drop a few feet in an attempt to dodge the attack. The sludge just barely missed her wings. She lost her balance momentarily as she dropped, but recovered quickly before hitting the ground. Dakota's voice cheered for her in the background, but she stayed focused. What was next?

Dakota went with the flow of the battle. "Acrobatics." she ordered, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. This was Boo's favorite move, involving some fun stunts if she so chose to perform them. A strong flap of her wings shot her higher into the sky. She tilted her head upwards, sending her body over itself in a back flip, before falling downwards and gaining momentum. With a slight twist of her wings, her body began to spiral downwards, headed right for her opponent.

W-what?!

The Grimer could not believe his eyes as the bird Pokémon suddenly dropped and avoided the globs of sludge. Just before she hit the ground, she flapped her wings and recovered from the drop. With a burst of speed she soared rapidly skywards. The Grimer craned his neck in an attempt to follow her movements, but soon lost her in the night sky.

Where did she go? His eyes darted around, frantically searching for his opponent. That bird was fast and elusive, and despite the flames that still wreathed him he felt a chill deep inside him. Backing away closer and closer towards the dumpster, he continued to scan the sky above him.

There! He could see the dark silhouette of the bird against the slightly brighter indigo sky. Thank Arceus for light pollution! Nonetheless, it wasn't easy to predict what she was going to do next as she spiralled towards him. From which direction would she strike?

He got his answer soon enough, but not in the way he wanted it as his opponent struck him hard in his flank. Though he was made of viscous sludge, it did nothing at all to lessen the impact. Howling in pain, he lashed out blindly, swinging his arms wildly to fend against the terrible bird of prey. By now he wasn't aiming to knock out the human's Pokémon. In his severely weakened state, there was no way he could win this fight. Rather, he wanted to buy himself enough time to slink back towards the crack in the ground that he emerged from and flee back into the safety of Ironwood's sewage system.

Grimer used Pound!

Grimer was hurt by his burn!

Nabooru's descention played out perfectly, and her spiral downward ended with a solid hit to the wild pokémon's body. Her body slammed into his head first, and afterwards she caught herself, flapping in place in front of her opponent. It took her a few seconds to compose herself, which was unfortunately long enough for the sludge monster to retaliate. In one swift motion, the pokémon reached out and took a swing at her.

For a blob of sludge, it packed a pretty decent punch. He stretched out and knocked Nabooru to the left, causing her to tumble to the ground. She landed and rolled, her wings flopping awkwardly and tussling her feathers. "You okay, Boo?" Dakota called out. It took her a moment, but Nabooru stood up and shook, mostly resettling her feathers. Dakota smiled, but was still pretty nervous about the situation.

"Quick attack." Dakota ordered, wanting to keep the ball rolling. She needed to keep Nabooru moving, keep her focused. Nabooru obeyed, and narrowed her eyes to focus on her target before she kicked off from the ground. After a few strong flaps from her wings she was up to speed, flying forward once again. As she approached, she tucked in her wings to prepare for impact.

Nabooru used Quick Attack!

Outmatched at every turn, it was only through sheer blind luck that the panicking Grimer's flailing limbs actually hit his assailant. This sudden positive turn of events earned him precious seconds, and he turned tail to flee as quickly as a weakened blob of sludge could. Which, unfortunately, wasn't very fast.

Before he knew it, something/someone slammed solidly into his unprotected back. Pain radiated in all directions from the point of impact to every molecule of his being like an electric shock. The world started to spin crazily around him as he heeled over with a dull splat, and everything went black.

Wild Grimer fainted!

A huge wave of relief swept over her as Nabooru's hit was successful. The sludge monster of a pokémon melted down, practically into a puddle, as it fainted. Dakota wanted to feel bad, really she did, but she couldn't help but be grateful. Admittedly, the pokémon grossed her out a little bit. She knew it wasn't his fault, but... still. Just not for her.

"Great job, Boo!" she praised, as the larger red bird fluttered back over to her. Dakota reached out and roughly pet her on the head, tussling her crown with her fingers. Boo leaned into it though, enjoying the affection. "Let's get out of here." Dakota spoke, almost with a shudder. After a quick potion application, Boo was back in her ball and Dakota was back on her way.
