"Come on Mephisto, not too much farther now." Mira called over her shoulder to her Houndoom who was dejectedly stepping over engorged tree roots and pushing past overly green fronds. His eyes were narrowed and he huffed very so often, not happy at all with their location. She supposed it was specifically what they were looking for that had put him in such a foul mood. At home he was a bundle of pure energy, leaping about and wanting to play fetch. And Arceus forbid the doorbell rang! He'd go running so fast down the stairs that often times in his excitement he'd run straight into the door. Though a few belly rubs and he'd stop acting like he'd broken every bone in his body.

Whenever they went out he transformed into a totally different canine. He became obsessively protective of Mira, growling at anyone who came too close. Especially men. Mira assumed he had been abandoned by one in his past. Mira stopped walking and turned around to examine the Houndoom for a moment. When she'd first met him he was skin and bones, his coat was dull and matted, listless eyes, and anger in his heart. It had taken her weeks to even get him close to enough to feed but her hard work had eventually won him over. Now, with her specially made pokemon food, Mephisto was thriving. His coat was as dark as polished obsidian, his bone like armor shining in the light that filtered through the thick canopy, and he was muscular and proud.

He'd gone through a stage of being a little too fat but a few extra minutes of play time a day seemed to work in keeping him trim. "Do you promise to behave?" Mirabelle laughed, shooting the dog a playful look. He sighed, pointedly looking away. This was an unusual mission for Mira after all. Normally she was in the business of rescuing Pokemon that were hurt or injured. In this case she'd been getting several calls about hurt Pokemon in the area, both wild and trainer owned. Apparently there was a rogue Liepard on the loose, wreaking havoc and making it dangerous for travellers.

Finding that she'd end up treating more Pokemon than she could handle if the violence kept up she figured her best best was to capture the creature. Perhaps she could rehabilitate it enough that it could be adopted out, or maybe even find a trainer that could deal with such a creature. She'd always admired Liepards and she found herself hoping to get to see it in action. While Mirabelle herself wasn't that big into battling, she knew Mephisto loved a good fight.

As if on cue he let out a sharp bark and leaped past her, heavy paws thudding across the soft packed dirt below their feet. He dropped his nose to the ground and sniffed, slowing to a prancing jog. Looking up his teeth peeled back to expose rows of sharp white fangs. "Did we find her?" Mira tried to see through the shadows ahead but couldn't make it out. Mephisto's nose never let her down before.

Liepard had been having a grand ol' time. She was the queen of pride rock, she was feared by all and conquered by none. The jungle was her kingdom and she ruled over it all. No one could stop her. Anyone that tried to stand in her way was torn down. The slithery snivy, the woobats, the aipoms, even the girafarig that got in her way were defeated... and now this flock of Pikipek didn't stand a chance either. On the prowl, Liepard crouched so low to the ground the greenery around her practically buried her. She slowly, silently, stalked her next prey, not even making a single sound.

A loud burst of sound echoed throughout the jungle and the flock of Pikipek took flight, startled. They disappeared in the jungle canopy before Liepard could make a move. Her pupils widened and her heart began to race, but she stayed put, hidden beneath the leaves and vines around her. What on earth was that? she thought to herself, having never heard a noise like that out here in the jungle. A roar? or a bark? Either way, this jungle's inhabitants aside from her kind were plants, bugs, and small creatures. Nothing that could roar like that.

Her ears twitched as she listened carefully, uncertain which direction the noise came from. She picked up the soft sound of footsteps approaching from behind. Damn, she cursed. She'd have to turn around, and doing so might risk her cover. After digging her claws into the soft jungle floor, she cautiously turned her head to try to see what was coming her way. She had to adjust her position, causing some slight rustling of the branches around her. She cringed, and froze for a moment, before completing her turnaround. Now, her piercing green eyes peered through a small opening in the leaves, and there it was.

A large - very large, in fact - black and white pokémon stood tall and proud a few yards in front of her. It was a mammal like her, with four long legs and paws with claws, only its fur was short and blank and its body was covered in bones. Not far behind it stood a human, and Liepard instantly wanted to bolt. The human was most likely the enemy's trainer, and when trainers were involved, it was bad news. They raised strong pokémon, they knew fighting techniques and strategy, and they often took pokémon from the wild for themselves. Her eyes shifted back to the stranger in front of her. It was on edge. Its teeth were bared angrily... and it was staring right at her.

It would be foolish at this time to continue to hide or try to run. She had been spotted, the best course of action now would be to face the situation head on. She was powerful, and she knew it. She was limber, she was stealthy, and she knew her own techniques and strategy. Not to mention, she was undefeated thus far. Very smoothly, she slipped one of her paws forward through the leaves. In a sleek, seamless motion her body followed, and she stepped out of the underbrush with her chest puffed out and chin raised high. She locked eyes with this new challenger and ignored the human behind it.

Greetings, stranger. she purred, and the tip of her tail flicked anxiously. Her eyes narrowed as she stepped to her left, beginning to size-up her opponent. Would you mind taking that big mouth of yours and your human far away from here? That flock of birds you scared off was my next meal. Being a human's pet I'm sure you don't know what it's like, not knowing where or when your next meal is coming. Be a dear and scurry along so I can get back to it, would ya? she growled, coming to a halt a few feet in front of them. If she was very, very lucky, he'd see that she was not afraid of him and that fighting her was more trouble than it's worth. If not, well... she'd continue leaving bodies in her wake as she has been.

Mephisto stared intently at the rustling leaves before him. Every hair was on edge, raised along the gentle curve of his back. He narrowed his glistening red eyes, lips curling back to expose his rows of sharp fangs. While Mephisto in the recent had become a kept dog, enjoying the life of being indoors he was no stranger to the outside world. He was wild caught, then later abandoned by his first trainer. It was then that he lived on the street, scrounging for food in garbage cans in a dirty alleyway. Just because he knew the lavish life of air conditioners, squeaky toys, and warm beds did not mean he was no more than a mere pet. Normally such a word wouldn't bother him, he loved Mira and would never leave her; but the way it slipped off the Liepard's tongue made his skin crawl. Venom dripped from every syllable and he didn't like it.

A low growl vibrated from his throat, paws digging into the soft earth. His long tail twisted through the air for a moment before going still, standing straight out and at attention. He stared at her for a few moments, his own gaze angry and offended. "No." Normally Mephisto was a Pokemon that waited for Mira's orders. He thrived off the partnership, knowing that they knew each other so well that often times her commands were the same that he was thinking of. He attributed it to their varied training sessions in not only battling technique but also obedience. He was not a fool, he knew his trainer was not the biggest fan of battling. She knew quite well what it could lead to, but he also knew she humored him because he loved to fight. And she'd never take that away from him.

He also knew the Liepard had to be stopped.

Mira knew he was going to charge before he even did. She could see all the tell tale signs of his aggression, and inability to keep it chained. She took note of the way his muscles coiled beneath his short obsidian pelt, rippling beneath the dark. He lowered his head, the growls going silent. There was always silence before a strike. Mira knew they were going to have to fight her, but she also knew they had to catch her. She could only hope Mephisto would prove to have some form of restraint once the battle got that far. Mephisto far surpassed any of her other Pokemon, she knew he was the right guy for the job.

The canine Pokemon opened his massive jaws, teeth separating to expose his tongue. At the back of his throat fire began to form, flames twisting inside. His own core temperature began to boil. And suddenly flames shot from his mouth, aiming not only for the Liepard but the very underbrush she had come from lest she attempt to skitter away. Mira could only hope he kept his flames in check.

That was too easy. Her whiskers curled as she smirked, watching the fur on the canine's back stick up off his skin. She had gotten under his skin almost literally, quickly, and easily. It was wrong of her to assume his situation, for she knew nothing of his past. However, she was a feisty lioness that would not show fear. She would not back down, and she most certainly wasn't going to play nice. For a second she wondered why he chose not to reply, instead staying silent, but then she remembered she didn't really care why. She was a queen and this jungle was her kingdom. And as the monster in front of her began to threaten an attack, her expression hardened and she focused.

Her muscles tensed as her opponent opened his mouth, bearing his teeth and exposing his tongue. He was building up an attack, that was clear, so she dug her claws into the dirt and prepared to avoid the hit if possible. A deep red energy filled his throat. Ahh, he must be a fire type, she thought to herself, analyzing his every move. Sure enough, a heavy burst of flames shot forward, but she was ready. Her tense muscles jerked free as she kicked off from the dirt, leaping to her right and landing in a tangled mess of roots. The flames had just barely missed her, and the tips of the fur on her tail were singed black. Her landing was a touch unsteady because of the roots, which frustrated her because she always stuck a landing, so she immediately kicked off from the tree base into the air.

She leaped towards her opponent. Reaching out with her claws, she prepared a swing at her opponent before landing. Coming down with a decent amount of force, her claws cut through the air leaving a deep purple streak behind them. If she stuck the landing like she normally always did, she'd land a powerful slash across his shoulder. She was smaller than he was and she knew he was just as strong as her, if not stronger, but she could hold her own. She'd play to her strengths which was her agility and sleek body shape. She had to at least give him a challenge, even if he was stronger than her.

Mephisto narrowed his eyes, lips pulling back into a growl. He had, at least, singed her fur. Though he'd certainly have preferred to singe her snotty little face. He didn't like that cocky look in her eye. Though if he would look in a mirror he'd see the same glint in his own. His surety in himself came not only from his own power but his bond with Mira as well. It was not only his trainer standing behind him. No-- it was the entire team. He knew why he was here. This Liepard had been terrorizing Pokemon and she needed to be stopped. Perhaps that meant catching her and finding her a suitable trainer, because Mephisto would make damn sure she would not be taking his spot on the bed.

Mira had to admit she was surprised Mephisto had missed. Though she supposed it was his own dramatic flair that had allowed her to read the signs so easily. Inferno, being a rather powerful attack, took a bit to build up. It was certainly not one she would have started with, though Mephisto certainly had more battling experience than her. After all he'd been wild once prior to his last trainer, and while fending for himself on the streets wasn't the same type of battle-- it was a battle all the same. Mephisto rumbled another growl from his throat, paws digging into the plush moss beneath his feet.

The feline leaped at him, claws extended from her dainty paws. She raked them across his face with surprising force. He turned his head away, though his body refused to move as he planted his feet firmly. His eyes were shut, lips curling back. He slowly turned his head back to face her, a look of pure determination in his eyes.

Without turning himself away from the purple feline, Mephisto slid his gaze back toward Mira. She was standing, hands together with the fingers tightly knit. Her face was slightly pale, a light sheen of sweat across her brow from the temperature. And perhaps a little from the nerves. She was still getting comfortable with the ideas of battling, though for a greater cause it had to be done. And in the spirit of trying new things, Mira decided it was time.

"Mephisto, try mega evolving!" She called out to him, voice shaking slightly. She hadn't seen it in action yet and was eager to see what happened. He turned his attention back to the Liepard, one corner of his lips turning upward almost like it was a smirk. His body began to glow with a bright white light. His horns straightened, extending high into the air. He grew taller as well, bone plates stretching across his chest. Mira let a small gasp fall from her lips, she knew he was a tough cookie but this far surpassed her expectations. He gave a snort, smoke expelled from his nostrils.

To be honest, she was somewhat surprised her hit landed so successfully. Sure, she was full of confidence in her own speed and ability, but... her opponent didn't even try to move. She landed on all fours and quickly sprung backwards to allow some more room between the two of them. Rather than pulling back, he just stood there and took the attack head on, with no fear. In that moment, a tiny part of her began to respect him. He was strong and courageous, kind of like her, only she typically tries to avoid taking damage whenever possible. She studied him closely. There were clear, open scratches across his face but he did not wince or cry. Instead, he stood his ground and turned his head back towards her, glaring with angry eyes. The smirk on her face faded away. This was going to be quite the challenge after all.

His trainer spoke up, which distracted her only slightly. Her ears shifted forward to listen but she kept her eyes locked on her opponent. Would he retaliate? Was he charging up another attack? She couldn't be sure but she wasn't about to let her guard down. He was told to try something, though she wasn't exactly sure what. Perhaps it was a new move they had been working on. Liepard dug her claws into the ground once more, bracing herself as he seemed to be building up some sort of attack. Only the attack never came. He was building up strength, power... he was morphing. Before her eyes, his appearance changed into the same black canine but with longer horns, thicker bones, and a split tail. What on earth did he just do? In all of her days battling strangers she never saw a pokémon change its appearance on cue like that.

This was bad. He was already intimidating to begin with, this was just ridiculous. Even his trainer was a little frightened by his new appearance. She lowered her head and a low growl began to vibrate in her throat. The claws in her paws began to retract and advance, again and again, digging into the soft jungle dirt over and over. Her legs bent at her knees just slightly, lowering her body towards the ground. Now in a ready-to-pounce position with her claws dug into the dirt, she prepared for what was to come. Her opponent was powerful, and they were just about evenly matched she felt. Not anymore. She would stand her ground and put up a fight of course, but a part of her was worried she might have finally met a pokémon stronger than her.

Being taller was definitely new to Mephisto. He wasn't a small Pokemon but now standing above six foot he realized how much more of the world he could see. His well polished bones glinted in the light that dappled the ground through gaps in the canopy. His eerie red gaze narrows, watching her retract and expand her claws over and over. He couldn't tell if she was priming herself for something or it was a nervous tick. He didn't care either way. He was ready to serve up some well done feline. Well, as well done as Mira would allow. He knew he was not meant to defeat the damn cat. He grunted and Mira sighed lightly, knowing full well what her best friend was thinking.

"Mephisto! Fire Blast!" Mira felt a tightness in her chest. She couldn't tell anymore if it was her heart's reluctance to battle or adrenaline. She had never been very interested in battling...but looking at her strong Pokemon facing off against another powerful creature, well it was something. She clenched her first, biting her lip as she tried to tell herself it was only natural for the adrenaline to get to her.

The Houndoom opened his mouth, a bright light illuminating the back of his throat as he readied a massive burst of flames in his throat. The flames spurted forth from between shining and sharp teeth forming into a massive star as it rushed through the air toward the Liepard.

Liepard narrowed her eyes. Those two were definitely up to something, most likely preparing his next attack. Her claws felt slick and sharp after honing them in the rough dirt underneath her, so she retracted them and spread her legs a little further in a battle-ready stance. She shifted her eyes over to the trainer, sensing a little bit of uncertainty or nervousness maybe? It was almost as if the trainer was hesitant to even give the order. Liepard wondered for a moment why she might be hesitating, but she didn't end up having time to think about it.

A burst of fire exploded from her opponent's mouth once more. This attack was much faster than the last, firing towards her and engulfing her before she could react. Every inch of her body lit up in flames, and she unconsciously screamed in pain. Instinctively, she fell to the ground and began to rub her face and body against the dirt. As the flames diminished, most of her fur was charred black and thin streams of smoke arose from her tail and ears. It hurt to move, but she managed to lift herself back up to her feet. After shooting a glare at her enemy and cursing under her breath, she winced in pain. Parts of her fur still felt like they were ablaze.

This was going to be rough, but she had to retaliate. That attack was very powerful, about knocking her to the ground. She hadn't fought against anything this strong in her life. Her ego was bruised severely now. Awkwardly, she half shook her head, ridding her fur of ash and dirt, and dug her claws into the dirt once more. She hadn't sharpened these bad boys for nothing. Shooting forward, slightly slower this time, she leaped across the clearing towards the pair, claws erect. It was a quick swiping motion again and again, her pain and anger feeding her attacks this time. Another attack like that and she might not be able to fight any longer. She had to make this attack count.

Liepard was hit by Fire Blast!
Liepard was burned.

Mira frowned as she watched the feline be engulfed within the flames. She remembered now why she wasn't a fan of battling. Mephisto however seemed to be thoroughly enjoying himself. His tail was wagging slowly behind him and she could tell just by looking at his stance that he was concentrated. A growl rumbled in his throat, lips quivering to expose his sharp fangs. She told herself she was doing this for both the Liepard herself, Mephisto, and the other Pokemon in the area. The Liepard was shaking herself off and Mira hoped the battle wouldn't go on much longer. The sooner they could leave the sooner she would feel. She felt a tightness in her chest and throat, though she doubted Mephisto felt the same sentiment.

The Liepard slashed at Mephisto over and over with her claws. He snorted, lowering his head and digging his paws into the plush ground beneath his feet. His tail twitched, now in an annoyed fashion. He barked sharply, drool falling from his lips as he prepared to lunge at her again.

"Mephisto, don't!" The Houndoom huffed and slightly turned his head back toward Mira. His face was not looking so great from the onslaught of claws, but he seemed more pissed off than anything. She knew he wasn't invincible and that eventually he'd fall and she didn't want that at all. With shaking hands she grabbed a pokeball from her bag and lobbed it at the ash covered Liepard.
