Once upon a time, Kieran would think that the caves of Victory Road physicalised the state of his soul. Both of them were hollows of darkness that sucked the light out of the sun. Yet, it was obvious to the people within Kieran's circle, and to his Pokemon friends, that a star had ignited within his soul recently. That incident with the wannabe thief, in which Kieran rediscovered an ability to care, took all of them by surprise, including the man himself. Maybe Kieran wasn't the darkness, but the light struggling to glow within. Here he was, sitting by himself in the middle of a huge gaping hole in the side of a mountain, hoping the darkness would give him some clarity. Here, he meditated. Being unable to see outside would help him see inwards. Why was he rediscovering what it was like to feel, to hurt, to love, at a time like this? He had taught himself to spurn these aspects of himself, but all of it was flooding back too quickly for him to understand. These emotions were making him weak.

He had been fast asleep, hanging upside down from the cave ceiling by his claws. His wings were tightly wrapped around his body, and he was so warm and cozy up there. After a deep, long exhale he closed his eyes and wiggled deeper into his wings. This was nice. This was the perfect spot. It was quiet, it was dark, and he could get the best day's sleep he'd had in a long time.

Something crackled, and he squinted one of his eyes open. What now? he thought, his pupil dilating as he took in the darkness. Something was moving towards him along the cave floor. Carelessly too, apparently, as whatever it was stepped loudly along the rocky floor. Or maybe it just seemed loud, he did have supersonic bat hearing after all. It just seemed louder than most pokémon he'd seen here in the cave. Then it occurred to him... it wasn't a pokémon.

It was a tall figure of a human. It moved along the cave and came to a stop. Noivern watched it very closely, having not been noticed yet. He wasn't sure he wanted to be noticed anyway, he was set up to take the best nap ever. Perhaps the human would keep moving and he could close his eyes again and drift off...

This visitor seemed to be resting, it had sat still in the same position in the darkness for a while now. Was it lost? Was it injured? Why would it stop here, when the exit to the cave was only around another corner or two. Maybe it didn't know that? He couldn't be sure. He was curious though, and despite being tired he didn't feel like sleeping so much anymore.

He took in a deep breath and unfolded his wings. They stretched out on either side of him at full span, before he let go of the cave ceiling and glided down. He floated to the side of the cave and came to rest on the cave wall. He was still a good few feet away from the human, so he could study him but still remain a safe distance away. The human seemed to either be staring into the darkness or his eyes were closed. Was he okay?

Noivern gave a few little high-pitched clicking sounds, just to see if the human responded or reacted.

Caves were quiet but filled with sound at the same time. This one reverberated with a hum that arose from the sundry sounds that occured across the subterranean world, as a water drop here and a slithering thing there came together across distorted distances to form the spectre of a sound that was both a hiss and a ring, a drone and a sigh, both here and everywhere else. And yet, one sound descended upon them like a rushing fog. Something huge came down in gentle strokes of a leathery wing. Kieran looked upwards but his eyes met nothing. His ears, now struggling to fill the sensory void that his eyes left open, felt as though an internal stretch of tightening wire was pulling them together.

Drat. All of Kieran's Pokeballs felt the same. His fingertips couldn't tell the one that held his swift, evasive battlers from his Tyranitar that would cave them in by its mere weight on the ground. The creature's slow swoops stopped and turned to measured breaths, and Kieran tried to keep his own as soft as possible. Bending over so that his lips hovered above his pockets, Kieran whispered and hoped his Pokemon could hear him.

"Pericles, I need you now."

A button unlocked, and an Alolan Marowak leaped out as he exuded a wreath of flame, condensing the cerulean heat into balls of light that located themselves across the chamber to form a network of spirit lanterns. Underneath the greenish light, Kieran saw a reptilian bat's face staring back at him, and he let out a highly uncharacteristic scream. All the tension in his chest pulled tightly into an expression of shock, and Pericles took that as a command forwards. He released a horrible Screech that seemed to shake the earth at its core, bidding the dragon to stay away.

To Noivern's surprise, the human was quite okay and quite startled. Several things happened within seconds of his descent. The human had spoke, there was a flash of light, and suddenly the cave lit up with small, blue flames. The brightness caught Noivern off guard, blinding him momentarily. He closed his eyes tightly and chirped in pain, flapping his wings and leaping backwards into the air. After his eyes adjusted to the new light he surveyed his surroundings.

It was definitely a human. A human that had already summoned another pokémon to his side to help not only light the cave, but defend themselves. The soft blue light from the flames flickered gently, and the little pokémon below held some sort of bone that also housed blue flames on either end. Once the human caught sight of Noivern, something unexpected happened. He screamed. This startled everyone in the cave, including the trainer's pokémon, who took it as a sign that his owner was in trouble. The pokémon let out a very loud screech sound that Noivern was sure could be heard throughout the entire cave tunnels. It hurt.

The Noivern faltered in the air, cringing at the high-pitched sound and lowering his guard. He felt weaker simply from the sound of it. He caught himself and flapped his wings, lifting him back up into the air. He wasn't sure if they were attempting to harm him or they were scared, so he hovered for just a moment before firing back with Supersonic. He let out his own type of screeching sound, that came across the cave in waves towards the trainer and pokémon. He hoped he'd be sending the message that he hadn't meant any harm, but that if they wanted a fight he would not back down.

After Pericles' Screech roared out into the depths of the cave, the Noivern returned the auditory attack with a cry of its own. The incoming Supersonic shrieked like the tiniest sharpest kettle hissing atop a fire, frying Kieran's and Pericles' ears with its jarring noise. The ringing seared the air like water sizzling out of a hot oil pan. Under the light of Pericles' floating lanterns, Kieran saw how the sound waves ate at the edges of the cave floor, cracking away at its borders and sending little fragments of earth plummeting down into where the light didn't reach. His Marowak's intangible physiology might protect it from dying a second time, but Kieran was still very much flesh and bone. He needed to neutralise the source of the damage, and hopefully convert its forces to his side.

"We're going to catch it, Pericles," Kieran grunted as he leaped up onto his leather-clad feet and retreated a safe distance away from the eroding precipice. His spectral companion, on the other hand, remained unfazed even as the ground shook beneath his feet, his eyes glowing with the same fierceness that shone into the cave. "Bring it down!" Propelled by its ghostly ability to defy the grounding powers of gravity, Pericles shot into the air and shrieked with a fury that channelled the powers of the dead into his bone before swinging the cursed weapon in the dragon's face. Pericles used Shadow Bone!

Noivern heard the trainer speak, but he couldn't understand the meaning behind his words. What he did know, was that an order was given and the trainer's pokémon leaped into the air. So, this was going to end up being a battle after all. He was a little disappointed, but he had to remember that he was a rather scary-looking bat himself, so he couldn't blame the trainer for being on the offensive. He hadn't really meant him any harm, but oh well. A little battle experience could be good for him, as it had been quite some time.

The little pokémon had built up some sort of ghost energy and focused it into his bone. He jumped high into the air and flung it at Noivern's face. Because of his flapping wings, the bone hit a little lower, square in the chest. The force knocked him backwards, the pain not just physical from the bone but a deep, spiritual pain. The weight of it almost brought Noivern to the ground, his soul felt heavy. His feet barely brushed the cave floor before he caught himself and flew back up into the air. Ouch...

He grit his teeth and retaliated, flying forward towards his opponent and spreading out his wings. In a quick swiping motion, he brought one of his wings down in an Air Slash attack.

Pericles floated where the Noivern once was, glaring coldly as the beast fell to the cave floor. Sadly for him, that moment of gloating was short-lived. Even though the giant bat plummeted almost out of the spirit lanterns' reach, it took back to the air again, soaring back up into the green-blue light and sending a killer blow in the Marowak's direction. The huge disturbance in the air, intensified within such an enclosed space, scrambled Pericles' ghostly physiology and sent him crashing back to the ground. Getting back up with vengeance in his eyes, Pericles' bone glowed like a sorcerer's staff, and he swung it forwards to release a dangerous blue bolt. Pericles used Ice Beam... but mistook a large stalactite for his opponent, sending his attack in a completely wrong direction. Pericles tottered about on his unsteady feet as his ears began ringing from the Supersonic he suffered a short while back. Kieran gritted his teeth. This Noivern was too good to give up.

He watched closely with narrow eyes as the Marowak quickly got back to its feet and fired off another attack. A bright white beam of ice splintered the air as it rocketed towards... the wall? It hit a low hanging piece of the cave ceiling and shattered, sending chunks of ice in all directions. Noivern could feel the chill in the air afterwards and the temperature in the cave seemed to drop. The swooshing sound of his flapping wings echoed in the tiny space as he flew back into the center.

His wings ached a little bit, and his chest still felt heavy from the previous attack. He wanted to land back on the cave floor, or hang from the ceiling again to catch his breath, but he knew that would make him extremely vulnerable. Nope, he'd have to tough it out for now. Landing was a bad idea, and he was sure being in the air was giving him an advantage even if it was only a slight one.

Wanting to stay above his enemy, Noivern kept afloat and chose his next ranged attack. He had to dig a little deeper for this one, into the core of his dragon heritage. It only took a moment for him to build up some dragon energy and fire it forward, attempting a Dragon Pulse. A blur of blue, purple, and red energy spewed from his mouth, lighting up the cave as it shot towards the pokémon and his trainer.

Pericles grunted in satisfaction as he watched ice encrust the Noivern, but stepped back with his eyes stretched wide as another Noivern swooped to the side. How did it escape that attack? He was sure it hit it square in the chest! All of this was too much for the little monster to bear, and he bent over slightly just so he could ground even more of his weight into the craggy floor. The world spun at a slow but unforgiving pace like a neverending pendulum swing. Outside of Pericles' revolving mind and way inside his own, his mind's sharp edges gleaming with thoughts of conquest and superiority, Kieran wondered if it was time to pull Pericles out of battle. Would he make it through another round without destroying himself?

With another screech, the Noivern emitted another sensory assault. Blue, red, purple beams exploded across the cave and coalesced into a crackling beast of such intensity and force that Kieran wondered if he was staring straight into the eyes of a god. With its jaws extended wide, the Dragon Pulse swallowed Pericles and engulfed him within a vortex of swirling lightning and flame, frying him down to his bones.

And yet, Pericles somehow survived! Charred and mentally eviscerated by the devastating attack, Pericles still stood with a look of evil rage, and he took aim at the swooping black figure that had descended close and low to the ground. Its huge wings danced along the rocks -- it was practically at Pericles' level, and he couldn't let this chance go to waste! Pericles charged up another Ice Beam and zapped it forwards, and Kieran screamed as he darted out of the way in time, leaving a spiky wall of ice where he stood a second ago! In his confusion, Pericles mistook his trainer's long black cloak for his opponent's wings!

"That's enough from you, young man, get back!" Kieran roared, sucking Pericles back into his Luxury Ball by force. A dark, determined look crossed his face. Playtime was over. Kieran had a frostbitten cloak to avenge.

"Go, Luke!" A Gardevoir soared upwards and joined the dragon in the air.

Aria Wolfe, thank you for your praise! :) Also, have you ever seen how the anime does Dragon Pulse??? It's CRAZY!!!

Watching the little Marowak struggle so much with his attacks and vision was almost painful. Noivern normally would have felt sorry for him, knowing himself what being confused is like and it's one of the worst feelings. However, the Marowak had thrown the first punch, and out of concern for his own safety, well...

He studied the pokémon and his trainer while they interacted, and flinched when the Marowak shot off another ice beam... at his trainer. The man had jumped out of the way in time, but was clearly fed up with the confusion and called his pokémon back to his pokéball. Noivern stayed put, flapping his wings in the air, but he would soon have to land. His wings were getting more tired by the second and his chest still hurt and felt heavy. Maybe the trainer would move along? Noivern could only hope that was his only pokémon and their battle was over.

To his dismay, the trainer called on another of his team, summoning a new pokémon to the field. Now, this new pokémon was a sight for sore eyes. He was bright white, practically glowing, with green accent colors on his head and arms. Noivern watched as this new opponent rose into the air and met him at his height. He almost couldn't look away, he had never seen such an interesting pokémon before.

He mustered up a little more energy to stay in the air, this new arrival motivating him. However, he was already pretty weakened from the first battle, so he didn't really have high hopes for this one. He wasn't going down without a fight, he knew that for sure. He darted forward, closing the distance between him and his opponent and striking at him with his wings in another air slash.

Kieran Reed (Sorry if this post is kinda bleh, I'm at work all day today and didn't want you to have to wait, haha. And about the Dragon Pulse, no I hadn't seen it! That is crazy!!)

Luke flew into the air and lit the cave up with his quiet dignity. His mind overcame his body's lack of aerial streamlined features by warping gravity in his favour, lifting him up into the air like a delicate and stoic being of light. Even though the air inside the cave was still and damp, Luke's dress flared outwards like ink blooming in water, cascading out in an invisible psychic wind. His serenity, quiet and calmness radiating from an inner pillar of assurance, stood fearlessly before the dragon.

I'm ready to catch it when you are! Kieran thought, and Luke reacted just as their minds clasped with each other. In comparison to his opponent, Luke was as fresh as the breeze and sunlight outside the cave. With little more than a determined gaze, Luke easily sidestepped the Air Slash, feeling just a little breeze as the attack flew past him and knocked a few rocks off the side of a loosely packed wall. Luke dodged the attack! Just after Luke evaded the attack, and with perfect synchronicity, Kieran leaped up into the air into Luke's telekinetic embrace. With a strong psychic bounce under his feet, Kieran ascended to the same heights as the duelling creatures and threw an empty Luxury Ball straight at the Noivern's chest!

Would it work? Kieran and Luke floated by each other's side as they awaited the verdict of their efforts.

When his air slash attack missed almost easily, he knew he was running out of strength. He had already been struggling to stay in the air, and building up the energy to attack with his tired wings had just about put him over the edge. As his opponent dodged him, his wing hit the cave wall instead, knocking a few loose rocks down to the ground with a crackling sound. Ugghh, he groaned, and almost fell to the ground. No, you can do this! he thought, mustering up the last bit of energy he had to stay in flight. He moved backward and out of the way of the pokémon in case it retaliated.

What happened next happened fast, and Noivern wasn't even sure he understood what had happened. The trainer stepped up and was elevated up by the pokémon's power somehow. It caught him so off guard he didn't even see the pokéball in the trainer's hand until it hit him in the chest. He panicked, but before he could react a light flashed in his face and blinded him. And then there was darkness.

He hadn't asked for this one bit! He was just curious about the trainer, that was all! He didn't want to be taken from his home, from his life. He struggled against the darkness, letting out the loudest roar he could manage. He thrashed around, slashing at the darkness with his wings and his claws, but there was nothing to attack. The darkness was still there. And he was so tired...

His wings fell to his side, and he took in a deep breath and let it out slowly. This was okay. It had to be, anyway. This wasn't the end, it's not like his life was over. This was a new beginning, a new type of life that he might not mind so much. He'd give it a try, at least. He was already feeling better, feeling stronger, as if this darkness was gentle and recovering. He closed his eyes and even smiled a little.

1... 2... 3........... DING! The Noivern was caught!
